UK Department for Education Cyber Attack: 607,000 Records Compromised in Data Breach
The UK’s Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed a significant cyber attack that resulted in hackers accessing approximately 607,000 records. The stolen data includes telephone numbers and email addresses linked to individuals and organisations, but the department has stressed that no financial details or sensitive personal information were compromised. The breach was identified and contained quickly, with officials stating that the overall risk to affected individuals is limited.
The DfE is working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the National Crime Agency (NCA) to investigate the incident. The attack targeted the department’s help desk portal and the Turing scheme portal, which are currently being fixed. As a precaution, the DfE has switched telephone communication while maintenance work is underway. The department has urged affected individuals to remain vigilant against any unsolicited communication that may attempt to exploit the stolen data.
While the breach of a police legal database was also mentioned in reports, it is not considered to pose a significant threat. Authorities have confirmed that no sensitive information regarding officers in critical roles has been compromised. The DfE cyber attack is part of a broader trend of increasing cyber threats targeting government agencies, highlighting the need for robust cybersecurity measures.
