Salmonella Outbreak in the Netherlands: A Two-Year Battle and Ongoing Concerns

Post

The Netherlands is currently grappling with a significant Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that has persisted for over two years, with 227 confirmed infections reported between June 2023 and September 2025. The outbreak, which has been linked to contaminated eggshells used in poultry feed, has prompted renewed investigations by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in 2026. This situation is further complicated by a concurrent large-scale outbreak in neighboring Belgium, where the bacterium was found in eggs from a major producer that also distributes to the Netherlands, highlighting the cross-border nature of food safety challenges.

According to a study published in the journal Eurosurveillance, the surge in cases in 2023 was largely attributed to inadequately treated eggshells from positive flocks being added to poultry feed. A causality analysis revealed a significant correlation between the number of positive flocks and human cases, with time lags of one month and three to six months. This indicates that the contamination source was not immediately contained, allowing the outbreak to persist and spread. The reasons for the sustained increase of Salmonella Enteritidis in the poultry sector remain unclear, posing a challenge for public health officials.

In response, RIVM has launched multiple investigations. In July 2026, they restarted an inquiry into the outbreak that has been ongoing since spring 2025, following a previous investigation in 2025. These efforts aim to identify the root causes and implement effective control measures. However, the complexity of the outbreak, with multiple potential sources, means that new cases continue to emerge, underscoring the need for vigilance and enhanced biosecurity measures in poultry farming.

For the public, prevention remains key. Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs, maintaining clean kitchen equipment, and washing hands before cooking and after handling raw meat or eggs are essential practices to reduce the risk of infection. As the investigation continues, authorities urge consumers to stay informed and adhere to food safety guidelines to protect themselves and their families from this persistent threat.
