Canada Launches Full Online Passport Renewal: No More Daily Caps
As of July 28, 2026, the Canadian government has fully launched its online passport renewal service, making it available to all eligible adult Canadians residing in Canada. Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the expansion at a press conference in Vancouver, marking the end of a pilot program that had limited online renewals to 2,000 applications per day. With the trial complete, the daily cap has been removed, allowing unlimited online applications from eligible citizens.
The online renewal process is designed for convenience but remains restricted to specific circumstances. To qualify, applicants must be aged 16 or older and have a passport issued within the past 15 years that is either expired or set to expire within six months. Additionally, applicants need a Canadian residential address and must upload a digital photo taken by a commercial photographer. Those with more than six months of validity remaining, or with damaged, seized, or surrendered passports, are not eligible for online renewal and must use in-person or mail-in services.
Processing times for online renewals target 20 business days, plus approximately five days for mailing. The government maintains its 30-business-day service guarantee: if a complete application takes longer than 30 business days to process, the passport fee will be refunded, effective April 1. This guarantee applies to all eligible applications, whether submitted online, in person, or by mail. Importantly, the online service is not intended to replace traditional methods; in-person and mail-in options remain available for those who prefer them or cannot use the digital system.
Currently, the online renewal service is only open to Canadian citizens living in Canada. Temporary residents, permanent residents, and Canadians living abroad cannot use the service yet. The government has not announced a timeline for expanding eligibility, but the successful rollout suggests further developments may be on the horizon. For now, eligible Canadians can enjoy a streamlined renewal process without the previous daily application limit, making passport renewal faster and more accessible.
