Air Canada Expands Global Reach with Seven New Long-Haul Routes

Post

Air Canada is significantly expanding its long-haul network with the launch of seven new or resumed routes across June 2026, spanning three Canadian hubs and introducing several exciting new destinations. The airline will operate from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Montreal (YUL), and Halifax (YHZ), with a mix of year-round and seasonal services. This strategic move underscores Air Canada’s commitment to strengthening its position as a key player in Canada’s long-haul operations, particularly in the face of evolving market dynamics.

Among the highlights, Toronto–Shanghai returns as a year-round service, marking a significant reinstatement of a vital transpacific link. Meanwhile, Toronto–Budapest becomes the first mainline service to the Hungarian capital since Air Canada Rouge operated the route from 2016 to 2019. This launch is particularly noteworthy as it provides Hungary with its first nonstop connection to North America since LOT Polish Airlines ceased its New York JFK service in 2022. The new routes also include fresh destinations such as Nantes, Catania, Ponta Delgada, Palma de Mallorca, and Brussels, offering travelers more choices for leisure and business travel.

The expansion is supported by a diverse fleet, including the Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners, the Boeing 737 MAX 8, and the new Airbus A321XLR, which enables efficient long-haul operations. Five of the seven routes are summer-only, operating until late October 2026, while Toronto–Shanghai runs throughout the year. This seasonal approach aligns with demand patterns, ensuring optimal capacity utilization.

Despite these additions, outbound services remain down by 2% compared to the record set in June 2018, when Rouge’s Boeing 767-300ERs played a significant role in transatlantic operations. Nonetheless, Air Canada’s proactive network expansion signals confidence in the recovery of international travel and its ability to adapt to changing market conditions. With these new routes, the airline is well-positioned to capture growth opportunities and enhance connectivity for Canadian travelers.
