Leicester City Cruise Past Northampton in Russell Martin’s Winning Start
Russell Martin marked his debut as Leicester City head coach with a comfortable 3-0 victory over League Two side Northampton Town in the EFL Cup at King Power Stadium. The Foxes, despite fielding a rotated side, controlled the match from the outset, though the Cobblers nearly stunned the home crowd within the first minute. A misplaced pass from Harry Souttar gifted the ball to Harvey Saunders, but the striker’s hurried effort was brilliantly saved by Jakub Stolarczyk, keeping the score level.
Leicester’s breakthrough came in the 15th minute when Caleb Okoli rose highest to meet a Luke Thomas corner, powering a downward header into the net. The goal settled any early nerves, and the Foxes doubled their lead just before half-time. Tom Watson and Stephy Mavididi combined effectively, with Mavididi finishing clinically to make it 2-0. The second half saw a flurry of substitutions from both sides, disrupting the flow of the game. Northampton’s best chance fell to substitute James Maxwell, who failed to hit the target from close range, while Leicester’s Omar Hutchinson saw a late left-footed strike saved, preserving the clean sheet.
The victory was a positive start for Martin, who was appointed as Leicester’s new head coach following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. The former Southampton boss will be encouraged by the defensive solidity and attacking intent shown by his side, even with a much-changed lineup. For Northampton, the defeat was a valiant effort against higher-tier opposition, but they will take heart from their early chance and competitive spirit.
Leicester City will now look to build on this momentum as they prepare for their upcoming Championship campaign, while Northampton will refocus on their League Two fixtures.
