Woman Saves Koala Joey from Python’s Deadly Grip in Brisbane Bushwalk
A routine dog walk in Brisbane turned into a dramatic rescue when a woman intervened to save a baby koala from the lethal coils of a python. Nell was walking her dog in Whites Hill Reserve at Camp Hill on Friday when she heard a commotion about 15 metres off the footpath. “I heard a lot of birds, so I ran over and that’s when I saw the joey look me dead in the eyes panicked and the mum was scratching at a python as she tried to get it off her baby,” Nell recounted. Without hesitation, she rushed to disentangle the young koala from the snake’s grip, successfully reuniting mother and baby. Though Nell was not injured by the python, she sustained several scratches and bites from the distressed joey during the rescue.
The koala joey, a male now named Lewis, was in critical condition when he arrived at Port Macquarie Koala Hospital. The hospital told Nine News yesterday, 20 November, that Lewis’ health hangs in a balance. The incident highlights the ongoing threats faced by Australia’s iconic koalas, including predation by native pythons, habitat loss, and disease. Whites Hill Reserve is a known koala habitat, and encounters with snakes are not uncommon, but direct attacks on joeys are rarely witnessed.
Nell’s quick thinking and bravery ensured the joey was freed from the python’s deadly embrace. Though she escaped injury from the snake, she did sustain several scratches and bites from the distressed joey—a small price to pay for saving a life. The mother koala’s frantic efforts to protect her baby underscore the strong maternal instincts of these marsupials. Wildlife experts remind the public to remain vigilant when walking in bushland areas and to report any distressed wildlife to local rescue organizations.
As Lewis fights for his life at the hospital, his story serves as a reminder of the fragility of wildlife and the importance of community action in conservation.
