Israeli Offensive in Hebron Displaces Nearly 5,000 Palestinians as West Bank Closures Tighten

Israeli troops have levelled a neighbourhood in Hebron, driving out hundreds of families in what local Palestinian authorities describe as collective punishment for a militant attack on an army checkpoint outside the West Bank city. The offensive has displaced nearly 5,000 Palestinians, according to municipal officials, who say the destruction was swift and widespread. Among those targeted was Amrish’s family, who were among the first to be affected. When Israeli media reports began circulating on Friday that the army would target such homes, Amrish rushed to gather clothes and essential documents. The house had faced the threat of demolition for years because it was built in Area C of the occupied West Bank, which remains under Israeli administrative and security control.

The displacement comes amid a broader tightening of restrictions across the occupied West Bank. Elsewhere, Israeli forces arrested at least nine Palestinians during raids and closed all main entrances to Ramallah. In the central West Bank, Israeli forces closed Ramallah’s main entrances, including the Ein Sinya and Atara checkpoints, the Rawabi gate and the Nabi Saleh and Aboud gates, and set up additional checkpoints on alternative roads. These measures have severely restricted movement and compounded the hardship for residents already facing economic strain.

Hebron is a major economic and industrial hub, with a diverse manufacturing base spanning food processing, leather goods, plastics, footwear, stone and marble, jewellery and trade. The destruction of homes and the displacement of thousands threaten not only the city’s social fabric but also its economic viability. Despite dwindling resources, a municipal official said the municipality was continuing to support residents, help them remain in their homes and facilitate the return of those displaced. The Palestinian Rights Commission has called for an international investigation into home demolitions and forced evacuations in Hebron, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The Israeli offensive in Hebron and the sweeping closures across the West Bank have drawn widespread condemnation and raised fears of further escalation. With nearly 5,000 Palestinians displaced and access to major urban centres severely restricted, the humanitarian impact is deepening. Local authorities and rights groups are urging international intervention to protect civilians and hold accountable those responsible for what they describe as collective punishment. As the situation develops, the focus remains on the urgent needs of the displaced and the broader stability of the region.
