Spokane Wildfires: Thousands Evacuated, State of Emergency Declared as Blazes Rage
In a devastating turn of events, wildfires in eastern Washington have forced the evacuation of approximately 5,000 homes and destroyed around 600 structures, including homes, businesses, and other buildings. The fires, which remain uncontained, have prompted a large-scale emergency response, with Governor Bob Ferguson declaring a statewide emergency. The most significant threat is the Old Trails Fire, which ignited on Saturday morning northwest of Spokane and rapidly expanded due to extreme heat, strong winds, and exceptionally dry conditions. As of Sunday, more than a dozen significant fires were burning across the state, affecting over 250,000 acres, according to Reuters.
The weather has been a critical factor in the fire’s rapid spread. While temperatures in Spokane were forecast to stay below 80°F (27°C) on Sunday, wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph (56 to 72 kph) were expected, complicating firefighting efforts. Benjamin Cossel, public information officer for the federal response team from California, noted that these high winds make it difficult to contain the blazes. Looking ahead, the region is expected to remain sunny and dry, with temperatures climbing above 90°F (32°C) by Wednesday, further exacerbating the fire risk. An alert warned of “extremely critical fire weather” that would produce significant smoke from ongoing and emerging fires.
Authorities have set up a shelter at Spokane’s main convention center to accommodate displaced residents. Thousands have been ordered to leave as the fire advanced toward homes and critical infrastructure. Officials have emphasized that evacuation areas will remain closed until it is safe for residents to return. The hazardous air quality conditions have also prompted health warnings, urging residents to limit outdoor activities and take precautions against smoke inhalation.
The situation remains fluid, with fire crews working tirelessly to gain control. The federal response team, called in from California, is assisting local efforts. As the state grapples with this disaster, the priority is ensuring the safety of residents and containing the fires.
