Trump Threatens New Attack on Iran as Tehran Vows Retaliation Against U.S. Bases
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have erupted once again after Iran claimed its latest attack caused significant damage to U.S. assets, prompting President Donald Trump to threaten a new strike. The exchange marks the first known direct U.S.-Iran military confrontation in weeks, abruptly ending a period of relative calm. The confrontation remains ongoing, with unresolved issues including sanctions relief and control of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran cited intelligence warning of another U.S. attack but provided no details about the threat.
Trump, signaling he is close to a major decision on the seven-month-old war, warned Iran to “behave” using unusually severe language. He also told reporter Yingst he would “probably” be open to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, though he remained in a “deciding mode” over the conflict. The post nevertheless sent a clear political message: Kharg Island could become the next major target if the confrontation escalates. Kharg is strategically vital because it handles the majority of Iran’s seaborne oil exports, making it a potential target if Washington decides to escalate its campaign against Tehran.
A senior Iranian military official outlined the main principles of Iran’s new targeting logic, intended in part to reestablish deterrence vis-à-vis the United States and Israel as the Iranian regime prepares for potential future conflict. Iran’s warning of retaliation against U.S. bases underscores the risk of a wider war. Meanwhile, Jordan’s military said it shot down 10 missiles, with the three remaining landing in unpopulated areas, highlighting the regional spillover of the exchange.
The broader dispute between Washington and Tehran remains locked over sanctions, Iran’s nuclear programme, and control of the Strait of Hormuz. With Trump threatening new attacks and Iran vowing retaliation, the situation is highly volatile. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the two sides step back from the brink or slide into a more dangerous confrontation.
