U.S. Visa Policy Overhaul: New Rules and Their Impact on Travelers and Students
The United States has recently implemented significant changes to its visa policies, aiming to tighten oversight and boost economic benefits. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finalized a rule that eliminates the ‘duration of status’ loophole for foreign students, exchange visitors, and media representatives. This move ensures that these individuals are admitted for a fixed period, not exceeding four years, aligning with their program’s length. The rule is designed to prevent indefinite stays and reinforce the primary purpose of these visas: study, exchange, or temporary work, followed by departure. This change underscores the U.S. commitment to rigorous vetting and compliance.
In parallel, the State Department has made its visa bond program permanent for certain B-1/B-2 visitor visa applicants. Nationals from 50 countries may now be required to post a bond of up to $20,000 before their visa is issued. Additionally, the Department of Labor has proposed increases in prevailing wages, which could affect H-1B visa holders and employers.
