Tropical Storm Trudy Weakens as It Moves West Away From Mexico

Tropical Storm Trudy has weakened as it moves westward away from Mexico’s Pacific coast, forecasters said. The storm, which had strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane late last week, has since lost strength and is expected to continue weakening rapidly as it pulls away from the mainland. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Trudy had been a major Category 3 hurricane late last week and was still a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 130 km/h (80 mph) on Sunday night, CBS News and The Associated Press reported. By Friday afternoon, Trudy had weakened further as it moved slowly towards west-central areas of Mexico’s Pacific coast, although some strengthening could occur through Saturday, forecasters said.

Authorities in Colima said the risk remained low but warned that heavy rain could still cause damage, according to the report. The storm’s slow movement had raised concerns about prolonged rainfall and potential flooding, but its weakening trend has alleviated some of those fears. For Canadians, Global Affairs Canada had told travellers to avoid non-essential travel on part of the west-central coast because of the storm. The advisory was issued as a precaution, but with Trudy now moving away from the coast, the threat is diminishing.

Trudy’s weakening comes as another powerful storm, Typhoon Champi, has moved from the western Pacific into the Philippine Sea and has become a Category 5 super typhoon, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Champi’s intensification is a stark contrast to Trudy’s decline, highlighting the variable nature of tropical cyclones. While Trudy poses a diminishing threat to Mexico, Champi’s Category 5 status indicates a potentially catastrophic impact in the western Pacific.

Forecasters continue to monitor Trudy as it moves westward, but the storm is expected to lose strength rapidly and pose no further threat to land. Residents and travellers in the affected areas are advised to stay informed about weather updates and follow any guidance from local authorities. The storm’s passage serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness during hurricane season.
