Taylor Farms Salsa Recall Expands: Salmonella Scare Hits Major Retailers

Post

Taylor Farms, one of North America’s largest producers of salads and fresh-cut vegetables, has issued a recall for prepared foods containing jalapenos due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall affects products sold at major retailers including Walmart, Kroger, Whole Foods, Target, Trader Joe’s, and Hannaford, spanning at least 26 states. This marks the second major foodborne illness linked to the supplier in recent weeks, following a cyclospora outbreak that has sickened over 6,000 people across 15 states since late June.

The recalled items include a variety of salsas, guacamole, taco dips, and other prepared foods. The FDA reports that a total of 236,192 cases of iceberg and romaine lettuce, sometimes mixed with other products, were removed from distribution across Mexico and 27 U.S. states. Salmonella infections have been reported in numerous states, including Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

In response, major restaurant chains such as McDonald’s and Chipotle have stopped using Taylor Farms products, while Coast Citrus has recalled remaining product and notified customers. The company is cooperating with health officials to identify the source of contamination and prevent further spread. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators for recalled items and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges in food safety within the fresh produce industry. The cyclospora outbreak earlier this summer, which was also linked to Taylor Farms, underscores the need for rigorous testing and traceability measures. As investigations continue, health officials advise consumers to practice safe food handling and stay informed about recalls to protect their health.
