A developing El Niño climate pattern is now forecast to strengthen dramatically during the second half of 2026, with some forecasters warning it could evolve into a rare “super” El Niño—potentially ranking among the strongest events on record. According to the Climate Prediction Center, El Niño is expected to continue strengthening through the remainder of 2026. NOAA has reported significantly above-average subsurface temperatures and anomalously high ocean heat content in the region, while NASA notes that eastward-moving waves have transported warm water beneath the surface, supporting forecasts that El Niño will continue to intensify in the coming months.

This super El Niño is defined by sea-surface temperatures exceeding 2.0 degrees Celsius (about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above normal in key monitoring regions—a threshold historically associated with extreme global impacts. Such events have occurred only a handful of times in modern records, and they often lead to more widespread and severe weather disruptions. The Climate Prediction Center emphasizes that even the strongest El Niño events do not produce typical impacts everywhere, but stronger events can more significantly tilt the odds in favor of expected outcomes.

For the United States, the winter of 2026-2027 could bring pronounced regional extremes. In California, very significant rainfall is expected across Southern California, while the central Sierra Nevada could receive a lot more snow, according to meteorologist Paul Pastelok. The Northeast, including New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire, faces heavy rain and significant snowfall. Elevated flooding risks are a major concern, particularly during major winter storm events. “The risk of flash flooding and river flooding would increase along with the threat for severe weather to include a higher probability of tornadoes with the highest risk area generally being across the Deep South, the Gulf Coast into Florida,” said Mark Wiley, a duty officer with the National Weather Service.
