Steve Belichick has officially resigned from his role as defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina, the program confirmed on Thursday morning. His departure comes just two weeks after Michael Lombardi, a longtime Belichick ally and UNC’s football general manager, also resigned. The exits mark a turbulent period for the Tar Heels, who are off to a 2-0 start in the 2026 season but will move forward without two key figures who were expected to shape the program under head coach Bill Belichick.
The younger Belichick had been on medical leave since early August, a situation his wife, Jen, addressed publicly. “Unfortunately there is misinformation and speculation about our own situation, but we believe prioritizing health as the most important thing you can do in this life and is invaluable compared to anything else,” she said. His leave began just a week after Lombardi was placed on leave in July, which triggered an investigation into the football program. That probe has now concluded, though details remain undisclosed.
Steve Belichick initially followed his father to Chapel Hill and spent all of 2025 as the team’s defensive leader. Prior to that, he worked on his dad’s staff with the New England Patriots, building a reputation as a rising defensive mind. However, his tenure at UNC was overshadowed by the investigation and his subsequent absence. Despite his resignation, North Carolina’s defense has been stout, allowing just 13 points over its first two games—a testament to the foundation he helped build, though Bill Belichick may be the primary reason for the unit’s success, as On3 noted.
The shake-up at UNC is the latest chapter in the Belichick saga, which began with Bill’s split from the Patriots after the 2023 season. When he didn’t land another NFL coaching job, his son Steve revealed that the 71-year-old wanted to remain visible during the 2024 season.
