Starlink Restored in Ukraine After Outage Grounded Defense Drones

Ukraine’s critical Starlink satellite communications network has been fully restored after a temporary outage that disrupted military operations, including drone missions, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “The most important thing today is that Starlink and Starshield operations have been restored to the speeds we had before all the restrictions,” Zelenskyy said in a statement. The restoration comes after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk imposed restrictions on Ukraine’s use of the service, which he claimed was in response to a violation of Starlink’s terms of service. A Ukrainian official disputed Musk’s claim, and the Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday that broader access had been regained.

The Starlink network has been indispensable for Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s full-scale invasion, providing high-speed internet for battlefield communications, drone operations, and logistics. “This result is important, above all, for our front line, for service members, for drone operations, logistics, and communications,” said Khamara, a Ukrainian official. The outage had grounded defense drones and hampered other fast-moving equipment, underscoring the military’s reliance on the satellite technology. Musk himself acknowledged Starlink’s importance, stating that it “remains critical to the defense of Ukraine” and that if it were turned off, the Ukrainian front line would “collapse immediately.”

The dispute began when Musk claimed that Ukraine’s military had violated Starlink’s terms of service, prompting SpaceX to restrict access. However, a Ukrainian official countered that the restrictions were unjustified. The Ministry of Defense’s announcement of regained access suggests a resolution has been reached. The restoration ensures that Starlink connectivity remains stable for projectiles and interceptors traveling at speeds exceeding 250 mph, a crucial capability for Ukraine’s defense systems. Soldiers, such as those from a separate task rifle battalion of the National Police of Ukraine, rely on Starlink terminals set up at combat positions, like those in the Donetsk region, to maintain connectivity in the field.

The restoration of Starlink and Starshield operations is a significant relief for Ukraine’s military, which depends on the service for real-time coordination and drone strikes. The incident
