Social Security 2027 COLA Forecast: Could Beneficiaries See a 3.6% Boost?

Post

Social Security beneficiaries could see a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in 2027, according to a projection released last week by The Senior Citizens League. This would be an increase over this year’s 2.5% COLA and the largest adjustment since 2023. The forecast is generating significant attention among the more than 75 million Americans who rely on Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. Several forecasters have revised their estimates upward over the course of 2026, largely tracking accelerating inflation data. While inflation has cooled from some recent highs, it remains elevated enough that analysts still expect next year’s COLA to exceed the 2.5% mark. Oil prices have had a significant impact on inflation since the Iran war began, adding uncertainty to the projections.nnThe official COLA is calculated by the Social Security Administration (SSA) based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for the third quarter (July to September) of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. The SSA will announce the official COLA in mid-October 2026. Beneficiaries tracking the Social Security 2027 COLA announcement and payment schedule should note the following key dates: Third-quarter CPI-W data collection runs from July to September 2026; the official COLA announcement is expected in mid-October 2026; the first SSI payment reflecting the new COLA will be on December 31, 2026 (due to the New Year’s holiday); and the first retirement checks with the new COLA will be paid on January 13, 2027 (for those born 1st–10th), January 20, 2027 (born 11th–20th), and January 27, 2027 (born 21st–31st). Additionally, beneficiaries who started receiving benefits before May 1997 will get their first adjusted check on January 3, 2027. Since payment dates are staggered
