Senator Murphy Accuses Pentagon of Blocking Access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut said Tuesday that the Department of Defense denied him access to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar during a visit to the Middle East, describing the move as part of a broader U.S. government effort to conceal the impact of the Iran war. The failed attempt came after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth signed a directive earlier this year restricting travel to the area, according to Murphy.

Murphy, a vocal critic of the administration, accused the Pentagon of “a deliberate campaign of obfuscation.” He claimed he was denied access as part of the Trump administration’s effort to hide the true cost of the U.S. military involvement in Iran. The senator’s office did not immediately provide further comment, but Murphy has been outspoken about what he sees as a lack of transparency in military operations.

During his Middle East trip, Murphy also visited Saudi Arabia, where he acknowledged being a “vocal critic” of the country and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He said it was important for people “to be here who disagree with Saudi Arabia’s policies to be honest and candid about those disagreements.” His remarks underscore the delicate balance between diplomatic engagement and accountability.

The incident highlights growing tensions between Congress and the Pentagon over oversight of military activities abroad. Al Udeid Air Base is a key hub for U.S. Central Command operations, and restricting congressional access raises questions about the administration’s commitment to transparency. As the Iran conflict continues, lawmakers from both parties may push for greater insight into the costs and strategies involved.
