Pirates Power Past Red Sox 8-4 as Bats Come Alive in Pittsburgh
The Pittsburgh Pirates may own a losing record and more strikeouts than any team in Major League Baseball this season, but their bats are no joke. On Friday night, they proved that emphatically, powering past the Boston Red Sox with an 8-4 victory at PNC Park. Brandon Lowe launched a three-run homer, and rookie Rafael Flores Jr. went deep for the third time in two days, leading the Pirates to back-to-back wins for the first time since July 26-27.
The game turned in the fifth inning when Lowe connected off Red Sox reliever Jovani Moran, sending a towering shot into the right-field stands to extend Pittsburgh’s lead to 7-2. The Pirates’ offense, which has struggled at times this season, showed its potential, but the team knows consistency is key. “The key is you know we have to find a way to get ourselves going again, get on another stretch, go in the other direction, and if you do that, this all becomes a forgotten thing,” one player said, reflecting the team’s mindset as they look to build momentum.
For Boston, the night was less encouraging. Starter Brayan Bello lasted just four innings, marking the shortest start of his young career. He had pitched at least five frames in each of his first 13 major league starts before Friday, becoming the first Red Sox pitcher to begin his career with such a streak since Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2007. The Red Sox did have some bright spots, including two successful ABS challenges, but they couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
The victory gives the Pirates a much-needed boost as they aim to climb out of the NL Central basement. With the bats finally showing life, Pittsburgh hopes to string together more wins and make a push in the second half. For the Red Sox, the loss is a setback in their playoff aspirations, and they’ll look to bounce back in the series finale.
