NBC Poll: Democrats Lead Republicans 50-45 on Generic Congressional Ballot
A new NBC News poll shows Democrats leading Republicans 50% to 45% on the generic congressional ballot, a result that underscores a persistent Democratic advantage as the midterm elections approach. The generic ballot, which asks voters whether they prefer a Democrat or Republican for Congress without naming specific candidates, has shown a remarkable lack of dispersion in recent weeks. According to the latest data, Democrats now hold a six-point lead (49% to 43%) in the 2026 generic ballot, a significant environment that could reshape the political landscape.
With Republicans currently holding a slim 220-215 majority in the House, Democrats need a net gain of just three seats to retake the chamber. In a D+6 environment, that is a modest target. The decisive variable appears to be the center of the electorate, which has moved sharply toward Democrats since January 2026. Party identification remains roughly stable—Republicans hold their base at 90% and Democrats at 88%—so independents and swing voters are driving the shift. The cross-tabs in the likely-voter version of the survey show especially notable advantages for Democrats: 68% to 25% among Hispanics, 57% to 34% among self-identified independents, and 64% to 29% among under-30 voters.
These gains are concentrated in suburban districts that are the primary targets of Democratic campaign committees, including areas in suburban Philadelphia, the New York City suburbs, Southern California, and the Atlanta metro area. While the current stretch of polling is notable for its consistency, the open question is whether this holds through the fall and survives the shift to likely-voter modeling that most pollsters will adopt as Election Day nears. For now, the NBC poll confirms a clear Democratic advantage, but the durability of that lead remains to be seen.
