Tafoya, who previously worked as a sideline reporter for NBC’s Sunday Night Football, defeated a crowded field that included 2024 nominee Royce White and Adam Schwarze. Her victory sets the stage for a highly competitive general election battle against Democratic incumbent Tina Smith, a race that national Republicans are closely watching as they aim to expand their narrow 53-47 Senate majority.
Tafoya’s campaign has been marked by a blend of conservative principles and some moderate stances. Notably, she supports abortion access through 12 weeks of pregnancy, a position that distinguishes her from more hardline opponents in the primary. Maeve Coyle, a spokesperson for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, pointed to Tafoya’s past as a spokesperson for an anti-abortion group and her support for policies that could increase health care costs for up to 90,000 Minnesotans.
