Melbourne Community Mourns Beloved Grocer Van Viet Truong After Tragic Assault
The quiet suburb of Sunshine in Melbourne’s west is in mourning after the death of Van Viet Truong, a 60-year-old grocer who ran the Hong Hung Asian Grocery for nearly three decades. Mr. Truong passed away after a senseless act of violence on Saturday, when he intervened to help a fellow shopkeeper during an alleged robbery. His store, a mainstay on Hampshire Road for over 20 years, has remained closed since the incident, with floral tributes growing outside as locals stop to pay their respects.
According to Victoria Police, Mr. Truong was at his shop around 2pm on Saturday when a group of teenagers, aged 12 to 15, fled a nearby store with stolen goods. Witnessing a scuffle between the group and another shop owner, Mr. Truong rushed to assist. In the chaos, he was allegedly struck in the head multiple times and fell, sustaining critical head injuries. He was rushed to hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, where Mr. Truong was known as a kind and respected figure.
In the wake of his death, a 15-year-old boy has had his charges upgraded to include manslaughter. The teenager, along with three other minors, was initially arrested in connection with the incident. Police allege that Mr. Truong was a good Samaritan who paid the ultimate price for his bravery. Detective Acting Inspector Sarah Thompson said, “This was a devastating loss of a man who simply tried to do the right thing. Our thoughts are with his family and the wider community.”
Mr. Truong’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and anger, highlighting the issue of youth crime in the area.
