Israel Secures $1 Billion Deal for 12 AH-64E Apache Helicopters with US Support
The Israeli government has approved a budget reassignment of approximately 1.03 billion shekels (about US$300 million) to facilitate the purchase of 12 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for the Israeli Air Force. This decision, made on October 14, aims to unblock negotiations that were reportedly on the verge of collapsing due to financing disagreements. The deal, valued at around $1 billion, underscores the deepening defense ties between Israel and the United States.
Defense Minister Israel Katz hailed the procurement as a critical step in the IDF’s force buildup. “The procurement of the Apache helicopters is a critical step in the IDF’s force buildup, one that will strengthen its operational capabilities against a wide range of threats and contribute to the security of the State of Israel in the years to come,” Katz said. He also thanked all those involved, led by Baram, for their professional and dedicated work and perseverance that led to the completion of this important procurement. The Defense Ministry, Katz added, will continue to work at full pace to sign additional critical agreements, including the acquisition of additional platforms, munitions, interceptors, and more.
The financing arrangement includes the approved reassignment of funds, with the remaining NIS 68 million to come from the 2026 state budget. However, a legal opinion attached to the government decision raised two main concerns: creating a situation in which the incoming government is faced with an irreversible situation, and risking prioritization of party interests over the public interest. These concerns highlight the complexities involved in such major defense procurements.
The deal introduces the latest version of the Apache—the AH-64E—into the Israeli Air Force, enhancing its operational capabilities. Both former US President Joe Biden and President Donald Trump have maintained extensive military support for Israel since the October 7 attacks, and this agreement further solidifies that backing. The procurement is seen as a key element in Israel’s long-term defense strategy, ensuring it remains prepared to counter a wide range of threats in the years ahead.
