Former CDC Director Urges Vigilance as Cyclospora Outbreak Expands Across 15 States
As the nationwide cyclospora outbreak continues to expand, a former Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director is urging Americans to remain vigilant about the produce they consume, particularly raw fruits and vegetables. The outbreak, which has been linked to lettuce sold at restaurants such as Taco Bell and some grocery stores, now accounts for cases across 15 states, according to federal health officials. Six states – Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire and North Carolina – were added to the outbreak after lab testing by the CDC showed that illnesses there were probably caused by the same strain of the tiny cyclospora parasite, which burrows into the lining of the small intestine and can cause weeks of explosive diarrhea if left untreated.
Among the more than 6,000 cases the CDC has tallied in the outbreak, nearly 300 have been hospitalized, and two people have died. Public health officials have also noted that detecting cyclospora in food samples remains technically challenging. While recalled lettuce remains the primary focus of the investigation, experts say the possibility of additional contaminated produce has not been ruled out, underscoring the importance of ongoing surveillance and consumer awareness.
Despite the outbreak, fresh fruits and vegetables remain an important part of a healthy diet, and federal officials have not recommended avoiding produce broadly. However, the former CDC director emphasized the need for caution, advising consumers to thoroughly wash produce and consider cooking it when possible. People should consider seeking medical attention if they experience severe or persistent diarrhea, signs of dehydration, significant weight loss, worsening abdominal pain or symptoms lasting more than a few days. Early diagnosis and treatment with antibiotics can shorten the illness and prevent complications.
As the investigation continues, health officials are working to identify the exact source of the contamination and prevent further spread. In the meantime, consumers are urged to stay informed about recalls and to practice safe food handling. The outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of robust food safety measures and the need for continued vigilance in protecting public health.
