Elon Musk Donates $276 Million to Republican Groups Ahead of Midterm Elections

Elon Musk has reemerged as a dominant force in political fundraising, donating more than $276 million to Republican groups since July, according to newly disclosed figures. The massive sum makes him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterm election, as the GOP fights to hold its majorities in Washington this November. The donations were confirmed Monday to CNBC by Lindsey Curnutte, a spokesperson for Musk’s America PAC, after Musk’s representatives provided the figures to The New York Times.

The largest share—$158 million—went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC backing Republican Senate candidates. This single donation ranks among the largest political contributions in American history. The group has spent heavily this cycle to defend the Republican majority, including in Texas, where GOP Attorney General Ken Paxton is running against Democrat James Talarico. The remaining $42 million was distributed across several key committees: $20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund (House Republicans’ main super PAC), $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC (supporting Paxton’s Senate bid), $10 million to the Republican Governors Association, and $2 million to the Republican Attorneys General Association.

Musk’s return to the political spotlight follows a public fallout with former President Donald Trump, after which he remained largely absent from politics for several months. His reengagement signals a renewed commitment to Republican causes. Andrew Romeo, a spokesperson for America PAC, framed the stakes bluntly: “If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country.” The statement underscores the high-stakes nature of the upcoming midterms and Musk’s willingness to invest heavily in preventing Democratic gains.

Beyond his political donations, Musk retains deep ties to the federal government through SpaceX, a major NASA and Pentagon contractor. This relationship adds another layer of complexity to his growing influence in Washington. As the midterm elections approach, Musk’s financial backing could prove pivotal in shaping the political landscape, reinforcing his role
