Costco Email Lawsuit Payout: Washington Residents May Receive Cash from $14 Million Settlement

Post

Costco has agreed to a proposed $14 million class action settlement to resolve allegations that it sent misleading promotional emails to shoppers in Washington state. The lawsuit, Aaland v. Costco Wholesale Corporation, claimed the retailer used deceptive subject lines designed to create a false sense of urgency, such as “Today is the last day to access Member-Only Saving” and “Hot Buys available for 5 Days Only.” While Costco denies any wrongdoing, the company chose to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of continued litigation.

The settlement covers Washington state residents who received certain Costco promotional emails between June 2, 2021, and July 7, 2026. The exact payout per person remains unknown because it will depend on the total number of approved claims. After attorney fees, court costs, and administrative expenses are deducted, the remaining funds will be divided evenly among all eligible claimants. Estimates suggest individual payments could reach hundreds of dollars, but the final amount will be determined once the claims process concludes.

Eligible consumers must submit a claim form to participate in the settlement. The deadline and specific instructions will be provided once the settlement receives final court approval. It is important to note that only Washington residents are included; Costco members in other states are not covered by this settlement. The case was originally filed in King County Superior Court in 2025.

This settlement highlights ongoing scrutiny of email marketing practices. Consumers who believe they received misleading promotional emails from Costco should watch for official notices and consider filing a claim to secure their share of the payout. For the latest updates, including the claims deadline and final approval hearing, check the settlement administrator’s website or consult legal resources.
