Astros Keep Wild Card Hopes Alive with Gutsy Win Over Angels
The Houston Astros entered Friday night’s matchup against the Los Angeles Angels with a clear mission: win and keep their dwindling playoff hopes alive. With the Tigers and Guardians both losing earlier in the day, the Astros had the opportunity to gain ground in the American League Wild Card race. All they had to do was take care of business against the last-place Angels. What unfolded at Angel Stadium, however, was a tense affair that perfectly encapsulated a season where little has come easy for Houston.
Rookie center fielder Zach Cole, playing in just his 13th major-league game, delivered a pivotal defensive play that preserved the Astros’ lead. With the Angels threatening to tie the game in the seventh inning, Christian Moore attempted to go from first to third on a single by Guzman. Cole fielded the ball cleanly and unleashed a perfect throw to third base, cutting down Moore and ending the rally. The play proved crucial as the Angels had already tied the score earlier in the inning, and without Cole’s arm, the game could have slipped away.
On the mound, right-hander France navigated through a tense sixth inning, allowing an RBI double to Jo Adell and walking Logan O’Hoppe to put two on with one out. But he buckled down, striking out Christian Moore and Oswald Peraza to preserve a 5-1 lead. The Astros’ bullpen then held firm, securing a much-needed victory. The win was especially meaningful given that Sunday’s season finale will be only the fourth game since 2015 in which the Astros (86-75) will play while out of postseason contention.
For the Angels, Mike Trout continued his historic career, hitting his 30th career multihomer game. The two-homer performance gave him 1,017 career RBIs, moving him past Tim Salmon for second on the franchise’s all-time list, behind only Garret Anderson (1,292). Despite Trout’s heroics, the Angels couldn’t overcome the Astros’ timely pitching and defense. With 13 outs remaining to procure, Houston held on, keeping their wild-card hopes alive for at least one more day.
