Americans Disapprove of Both Parties, but Republicans Bear the Brunt of Voter Anger

A new NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey reveals a grim national mood heading into the midterm elections, with voters holding deeply unfavorable views of both major political parties—yet Republicans and President Donald Trump receiving significantly more negative ratings. The poll shows that a majority of Americans view the president’s administration as uniquely corrupt, even as they look skeptically at corruption in both parties. This sentiment comes as satisfaction with the state of the nation has dropped to just 39% among Republicans overall, including those who lean to the GOP, illustrating the challenging environment their party faces.

The poll also found that 51% of respondents “strongly disapprove” of Trump’s performance, a second-term high. This intense disapproval, coupled with widespread economic discontent, poses a serious threat to the GOP’s House and Senate majorities in November. Registered voters said they prefer Democrats over Republicans to control Congress by a 55%-45% spread, another warning sign for the GOP. The economy remains the top voting issue across the political spectrum, with 84% of registered voters—including 88% of Democrats and 82% of Republicans—saying it is very important to their vote. Economic ratings have turned more negative, and concerns about prices, particularly for gas and energy, are rising.

Beyond the economy, voters are also deeply concerned about the future of democracy, with 73% considering it important to their vote. Healthcare (68%), education (62%), immigration (59%), and foreign policy (57%) are also seen as key issues. These priorities reflect a electorate that is engaged and anxious about multiple fronts. The poll underscores a pervasive distrust toward both parties, but Trump and Republicans are bearing the brunt of voter dissatisfaction. As Pew Research Center notes, understanding these views is crucial for the public, media, and decision-makers. With the midterms approaching, the GOP faces an uphill battle to retain control of Congress amid a dissatisfied and skeptical electorate.
