ADAC and Shell Part Ways: New Fuel Discount Era Begins with Esso
After two decades of partnership, the German automobile club ADAC is ending its fuel discount collaboration with Shell. The decision, effective December 31, 2026, marks a significant shift for millions of ADAC members who have enjoyed a per-liter discount at Shell stations. Shell is concluding the agreement to focus on expanding its own loyalty program, Shell ClubSmart, while ADAC has already secured a new partner: Esso. Starting September 1, 2026, ADAC members will be able to benefit from fuel discounts at Esso stations across Germany.
This transition brings a notable change in the partner network. Shell operates roughly 1,900 stations nationwide, whereas Esso maintains around 1,100 locations. This means ADAC members will have fewer participating stations, potentially affecting convenience and accessibility. However, ADAC’s existing agreement with Agip/Eni remains active, providing an alternative for members. The move is part of a broader trend where companies are increasingly prioritizing their own customer loyalty ecosystems over external partnerships.
For ADAC members, the switch means adapting to a new fuel discount provider. While the exact discount amount at Esso has not been disclosed, it is expected to be comparable to the previous Shell benefit. The change also reflects Shell’s strategic pivot towards its proprietary ClubSmart program, which offers personalized rewards and digital services. This shift underscores the growing importance of data-driven loyalty initiatives in the fuel retail sector.
As the transition approaches, ADAC members should stay informed about the new terms and conditions. The partnership with Esso is set to begin in September 2026, giving members a few months to adjust. In the meantime, the existing Shell discount remains valid until the end of 2026. This development highlights the dynamic nature of corporate partnerships and the need for consumers to remain flexible in a changing market.
