Trump Demands FCC Action Against NBC’s Kristen Welker Over Endorsement Commentary
Former President Donald Trump has called for NBC News host Kristen Welker to face rebuke or punishment from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) over her recent comments about his endorsement record. In a series of Truth Social posts, Trump accused Welker of spreading “Fake Polls and Commentary” after she noted on a local affiliate that he had experienced “some mixed results” in his primary endorsements. The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between Trump and the media as he continues to wield significant influence over the Republican Party.
Welker’s remarks, made during a discussion about the upcoming midterm elections, acknowledged that while Trump has had some setbacks, his recent endorsement of Senator Darline Graham—the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham—was successful in her primary runoff. Trump, however, seized on the phrase “mixed results,” arguing that his endorsement record is stronger than ever. In a 23 August social media post, he maintained, “My Endorsements are stronger than ever,” citing victories for Graham and Oklahoma gubernatorial hopeful Mike Mazzei as evidence of his continued sway.
The dispute escalated after NBC News published an article on 19 August examining Trump’s endorsement record, with a headline stating that his “endorsement record takes a hit at the end of primary season.” Trump’s demand for FCC action against Welker is seen by critics as an attempt to intimidate journalists and undermine press freedom. The FCC, which regulates broadcast communications, typically does not intervene in editorial content, making Trump’s request highly unusual and likely to be dismissed.
Despite the backlash, Welker’s original comments were measured, noting that Trump would “loom large” over the midterms and that his recent pick of Graham was a success. The incident underscores the fraught relationship between Trump and the media, as he continues to challenge unfavorable coverage and push back against narratives that question his political influence. As the 2024 election cycle approaches, such clashes are likely to intensify, with Trump positioning himself as a kingmaker while facing scrutiny over his endorsement track record.
