DeSoto Football Embraces New Era: Moving to 5A with Championship Pedigree
The DeSoto Eagles football program, a powerhouse in Texas high school sports, is entering a new chapter in 2026. After years of competing in the state’s largest classification, DeSoto will move down to Class 5A Division I, a shift driven by the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment and the school’s shrinking enrollment. This change, while significant, comes with a rich legacy: the Eagles have won four state championships, three of them in the last four years, and have sent 13 players to the NFL Draft since 2001. Head coach Claude Mathis, who famously doesn’t call his squad a ‘team’ but rather a family, will lead the charge in this new era.
The decision to move down was not made lightly. Coach Mathis emphasized the importance of safety and depth, stating, “The sheer numbers behind it was the main reason, just the safety of it, not having the depth to be competitive across all sports that we participate in.” This move ensures that DeSoto can compete at a level where its roster size is more proportionate, allowing athletes to excel without the risk of overextension. The Eagles will now compete in a district that includes familiar foes, but also new challenges. Notably, neighboring rival Duncanville will remain in 6A, leaving DeSoto to face a new set of opponents in 5A Division I.
Adding to the excitement, three transfer players have been ruled eligible for the upcoming season. Dhillon McGee, Jayden Shaw, and Wyatt Davis will suit up for the reigning 6A Division II champions, bringing fresh talent to an already formidable roster. Their addition underscores DeSoto’s continued appeal as a destination for top high school football players. As the Eagles prepare for this transition, they do so with a target on their backs, but also with the confidence of a program that has consistently proven its mettle on the biggest stages. The 2026 season promises to be a thrilling ride for DeSoto fans, as the team looks to add another championship to its storied history in a new classification.
