Switzerland is in the grip of a prolonged and intensifying heat wave, with authorities issuing expanded warnings as temperatures soar across the country. The Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology (MeteoSwiss) has raised alerts for low-lying areas, signaling that the heat wave is affecting more regions and lasting longer than initially anticipated. Level 3 heat warnings, indicating a “significant risk,” are now in effect for areas below 800 meters on the northern side of the Alps and below 600 meters on the southern side, according to a statement released on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.
The extreme heat has already shattered numerous records. On Saturday, 19 weather stations recorded new all-time highs, with Basel reaching a scorching 39 degrees Celsius. This marks a dramatic escalation in a summer that has already seen multiple heat events. The persistent high temperatures pose serious health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing conditions.
