Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Linked to Lettuce: 10,900+ Cases Across 17 States
The United States is currently grappling with a significant cyclosporiasis outbreak linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce, with more than 10,900 cases reported across 17 states, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The hardest-hit states are Michigan and Ohio, where hospitalizations have been reported. Health officials emphasize the importance of seeking medical care, as the infection can be treated. “We are seeing hospitalizations, so if you do get sick, good hydration is critical, and so is getting clinical care because this can be treated,” says Kniel, a food safety expert.
The investigation, led by the FDA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state health officials, has traced the source to a farm in central Mexico operated by Taylor Farms, a major U.S. supplier. The FDA has stated that it “remains confident that all recalled iceberg lettuce related to this specific cyclospora outbreak is off the market.” However, the company has faced criticism for a since-deleted statement claiming the FDA “apologized” for a “false positive” in testing its lettuce. This incident adds to Taylor Farms’ history of several major recalls over the past decade.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Symptoms typically include watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue, and can last for weeks if untreated. The infection is treated with specific antibiotics, making prompt medical attention crucial. The two reported deaths associated with this outbreak occurred in individuals with “significant underlying health conditions,” according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
Consumers are advised to check for recalled lettuce and discard any affected products. The FDA and CDC continue to monitor the situation, but the risk of new infections is believed to be low now that the contaminated lettuce has been removed from the market. Still, health officials urge anyone who has consumed recalled lettuce and developed symptoms to seek medical care and stay hydrated. This outbreak serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety practices and the need for robust oversight in the produce supply chain.
