Mystery Deepens in Grenada: Search Intensifies for Missing American Elizabeth Waddell
Authorities in Grenada are racing against time to locate Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, a 44-year-old mother from Cary, North Carolina, who vanished on July 22, 2026, while vacationing on the Caribbean island. According to the Royal Grenada Police Force, Waddell was last seen swimming at Grand Anse Beach on the southern coast. Her family reported her disappearance after she failed to return from the swim, triggering a multinational search effort that has now entered its fifth day.
Police spokesperson Connaught revealed that investigators are scrutinizing movements during the critical period of her disappearance. “The investigative team is also examining whether any person, vessel, or vehicle moved to the relevant locations during this critical period,” Connaught said. The search has expanded to include coastal patrols and aerial surveillance, with detectives pursuing multiple leads. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing that the case remains active.
Waddell’s husband, Cailen Waddell, a Town of Cary employee, has publicly pleaded for her safe return. In a social media post, he wrote, “I expect nothing less than Liz’s safe return — so please [send] your love, light, thoughts, and prayers our way.” Friends and loved ones have rallied, distributing missing person flyers and maintaining a vigil. Amanda Romano-Harmon, a family friend of 25 years, told WRAL News that the community is “desperately trying to find Elizabeth,” highlighting the emotional toll on those closest to her.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not ruled out any possibilities, including foul play. The U.S. State Department is reportedly coordinating with Grenadian officials. For now, the focus remains on locating Waddell, with police urging anyone with even the smallest detail to contact the Royal Grenada Police Force. The case has drawn widespread attention, with updates being closely followed by media outlets and the public alike.
