The win, powered by a barrage of home runs and a stellar pitching performance, extended Seattle’s hot streak to 11 wins in their last 12 games, putting them one game ahead of Houston with just eight games remaining in the regular season.
Eugenio Suárez launched his 47th home run of the season, while three other Mariners also went deep, providing all the offense needed on a night when starting pitcher Bryan Woo was in control. Woo pitched five effective innings before leaving unexpectedly, but not before escaping a critical jam in the fourth inning. With runners on first and second and one out, Woo struck out Jose Altuve and Zach Cole to quell Houston’s only significant threat of the game. Suárez also contributed defensively with a barehanded putout to nab speedster Jake Meyers, keeping Woo on cruise control.
The Mariners’ offensive outburst was notable, but none of the homers came from Cal Raleigh, who remains tied atop the franchise’s single-season leaderboard with Ken Griffey Jr. Seattle’s power display underscored their recent dominance, as they have now won the season series against Houston 6-5. The Astros, meanwhile, are feeling the pressure as they are tied with the streaking Cleveland Guardians for the final American League wild card spot, one game behind the Boston Red Sox with seven games left.
Astros manager Joe Espada acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “They’re very important games.” The series concludes Sunday night, and with both teams fighting for postseason positioning, every pitch matters. Seattle’s surge has been remarkable, and they now control their own destiny in the division race. As the regular season winds down, the Mariners have shown they are a force to be reckoned with, while the Astros face an uphill battle to secure their playoff berth.
