Binance Hit by $6 Billion Crypto Heist: The Biggest in History

Post

In what is being called the largest cryptocurrency theft ever, Binance, the world’s biggest crypto exchange, has been hit by a $6 billion heist. The attack, which targeted Binance wallets across different chains, has sent shockwaves through the industry and raised serious questions about the security of centralized exchanges. According to the exchange, about half of the stolen assets had been frozen, but many remain in the hands of the hackers. Binance has vowed to “cover all losses” and stated that “user funds remain safe.”

The hackers managed to produce valid signatures for Binance wallets on different chains, using different key types and signing schemes, all within about half an hour. This unprecedented feat suggests a sophisticated attack that may not rely on traditional private key leaks. Binance has found no evidence of a wallet private key leak and plans to publish a technical post-mortem once the investigation is complete. The exchange also confirmed that 567 million USDT related to the potential hack had been identified, and it is working with partners to protect the industry. As Tim Sun, senior researcher at Hong Kong-based HashKey Group, noted, “It may further dampen risk appetite and prompt investors to reassess the safety of assets held on centralised exchanges, as well as counterparty, solvency and liquidity risks.”

The attack bears similarities to a previous hack on crypto exchange Bitget in September, where $388 million was lost. According to Check Point’s Dave, this implies that “attackers no longer need the vault keys.” Eric Jardine, Chainalysis’ Head of Research, urged every exchange to remain vigilant, as platforms are attractive targets for hackers due to the sheer value of assets they hold. The incident underscores the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the need for exchanges to constantly upgrade their security measures.

While Binance moves to reassure users and cover losses, the broader implications for the crypto market remain uncertain. The heist could accelerate a shift towards decentralized finance (DeFi) or prompt stricter regulatory oversight of centralized exchanges. As the investigation continues, the industry watches closely to see how Binance responds and whether this event will
