Investigators in Bend, Oregon, are working to determine the motive and how a teenage gunman obtained the weapon used in a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. The attack, which left two people dead and two others critically injured, ended when a heroic parent intervened. According to officials, a father of two students saw the gunman and followed him into the school, fatally shooting him to stop the attack. The shooter was identified as a teen who had previously attended special needs classes at Silver Rail, according to investigators. Authorities have searched the gunman’s home, but a potential motive remains under investigation.
When police arrived on the scene, they found the shooter had approximately 44 remaining rounds of 12-gauge ammunition on him or in his backpack, said Krantz. Police are still processing the school as part of the ongoing investigation. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher remained hospitalized with critical injuries, police said.
