Heroic Teacher and Bystanders Hailed for Preventing Further Bloodshed in Bend School Shooting
BEND, Ore. — A community is grieving after a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday, October 15, left three children and a teacher dead and two others critically injured. But as details emerge, authorities are also praising the quick actions of a teacher and two bystanders who likely prevented an even greater tragedy. According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the suspect opened fire in a special education classroom, killing three students and a teacher. A 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher were wounded and rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. The suspect, described only as a teenager, was taken into custody. A Maverick 88 pump-action 12-gauge shotgun was found near the suspect, who had approximately 44 remaining rounds of 12-gauge ammunition, Krantz said at an emotional press conference on Friday.nnThe teacher in the classroom threw her cell phone at the suspect, then tackled him and fought to take the firearm from him. “She was not injured in that incident, but she almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” Krantz said. The chief also credited a passerby in a pickup truck and a local father who acted quickly to subdue the suspect. Their identities have not been released, but their actions are being called heroic. “Their bravery in the face of danger undoubtedly saved lives,” Krantz added.nnThe motive for the attack remains under investigation, and authorities have not confirmed whether the teenager had any connection to the school. “How the suspect got the weapon and ammunition remains part of the active criminal investigation, and I will not be able to address any of that portion today,” Krantz said. The Bend Police Department is working with local and federal agencies to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Counselors and support services have been made available to students, staff, and families affected by the tragedy.nnAs the community mourns, questions about school safety and gun access are again at the forefront. The quick response of the teacher and bystanders serves as a reminder of the courage shown in moments of crisis. OPB journalists were on the scene and provided audio accounts of the chaos and heroism. “Our hearts go out to the victims and their
