Tropical Storm Rachel Threatens Newport Beach with Significant Flooding and Erosion
Newport Beach and other coastal communities across Southern California are bracing for potentially significant flooding and beach erosion as Tropical Storm Rachel churns toward the region. On Sunday, forecasters warned that the storm’s precise track remained uncertain, but its center was most likely to move into northern Baja California, south of the U.S. border. Despite the uncertain path, the National Weather Service issued a coastal flooding advisory that remains in effect through Tuesday, with a coastal flood warning specifically for Los Angeles and Orange County beaches through 3 p.m. Sunday. Waves of 4 to 7 feet are expected, along with strong rip currents and significant beach erosion, posing a threat to low-lying areas and oceanfront properties.
In Long Beach on Saturday morning, a city crew remained stationed at 63rd Place and Ocean Boulevard, pumping water from the ocean that was traveling toward Ocean Boulevard back out toward Alamitos Bay. Nearby residents milled about, observing the scene and capturing photos or videos on their phones. The proactive measure highlights the seriousness of the situation, as local authorities work to mitigate flooding before the storm’s peak impact. The coastal flood warning and advisory underscore the need for residents to stay alert and prepared for possible evacuations or road closures.
The storm also brings cooler temperatures, a sharp contrast to Southern California’s prolonged October heat wave. Highs will generally be in the 60s and low 70s by Monday, offering some relief but also signaling the storm’s influence. For those in vulnerable areas, the rising waters have already caused disruptions. Musician Jennifer Trevour waded through chest-high water in her garage on West Balboa Boulevard to save her keyboard. “I got the keyboard out, but nothing else,” she said, illustrating the sudden and destructive nature of the flooding. Trevour’s experience serves as a reminder of the personal toll and the importance of heeding evacuation orders.
As Tropical Storm Rachel continues its approach, residents are urged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local officials. The combination of heavy rain, high surf, and coastal flooding could lead to dangerous conditions through Tuesday. Emergency crews remain on standby, and communities are advised to avoid flooded areas and never drive through standing water. With the storm’s track still uncertain,
