Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has named Elon Musk, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, and defense entrepreneur Palmer Luckey as co-leads of Project Meridian, a major Pentagon study on the future of warfare. The announcement came during Hegseth’s State of the Force address, where he called the three men “the best forecasters of future conflict,” positioning them as the driving force behind an effort to map where modern combat is heading.

Project Meridian will examine warfare across a wide range of domains, from underground operations all the way out to cislunar space. According to Hegseth, the co-leads will collaborate with private sector figures, outside experts, and Pentagon chief technology officer Emil Michael, a former Uber vice president. Together, they will “creatively look to the future and identify the domains that we must conquer.” The project’s core mission is to identify which technology domains deserve priority development, helping the Pentagon focus its resources on the most critical areas for future conflict.

Both Musk and Luckey bring significant commercial ties to the table, offering perspectives from the private sector that could shape military innovation. Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur behind SpaceX and Tesla, and Luckey, founder of Oculus VR and Anduril Industries, have deep experience in cutting-edge technology. Gingrich, a longtime political figure and author, adds strategic and historical insight. Their combined expertise is expected to inform a forward-looking assessment of warfare’s next frontiers.

The appointment of these three figures signals the Pentagon’s intent to leverage outside talent and unconventional thinking as it prepares for emerging threats. With a focus on domains ranging from subterranean to space, Project Meridian aims to set a roadmap for technological superiority in future conflicts. As Hegseth emphasized, the goal is not just to anticipate change but to actively shape the battlefield of tomorrow.
