DoorDash Scores Big with NHL Partnership, Expands Costco Delivery and More

Post

DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) is making headlines with a major multiyear North American partnership with the National Hockey League (NHL), naming the delivery platform the Official On-Demand Delivery and Pick Up Partner of the NHL in both Canada and the United States. The announcement, made jointly from New York, San Francisco, and Toronto, positions DoorDash prominently throughout the hockey season, including a significant presence during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. “For tens of millions of hockey fans across North America, every night is appointment viewing,” said Gina Igwe, Vice President of Brand, Creative, and Consumer Marketing at DoorDash. She added that in Canada, “hockey night is more than a game, it’s a family ritual and a way fandom gets passed from one generation to the next.” This partnership underscores DoorDash’s commitment to connecting with communities through shared passions.

In addition to the NHL deal, DoorDash continues to expand its offerings beyond restaurant delivery. The company recently announced that customers can now order groceries, pantry staples, household essentials, electronics, seasonal merchandise, and more from Costco warehouses through DoorDash for same-day delivery. This move follows DoorDash’s August statement that new verticals outside restaurants, including grocery and retail, are growing faster than its core restaurant business and remain on track to turn gross profit positive by the end of the year. The expansion into retail is a strategic push to diversify revenue streams and capture a larger share of the on-demand delivery market.

However, DoorDash faces increasing competition in the delivery space. Walmart is reportedly moving into the delivery action, starting with donuts, coffee, and sandwiches, while Costco has also expanded its partnership with Uber Technologies to offer delivery through Uber Eats in 47 states. Additionally, a recent report from Citrini Research highlighted potential AI risks, causing DoorDash stock to slide. On the consumer side, Chase Sapphire Reserve Card has added a new $15 monthly DoorDash credit, and a security camera captured a DoorDash driver taking a family’s car keys, raising safety concerns. Despite these challenges, DoorDash’s NHL partnership and retail expansion signal its ongoing efforts to innovate and grow in the competitive delivery landscape.
