Invictus Games in the United States: Honoring Wounded Warriors Through Sport
The Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event founded in 2014 by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, provides a powerful platform for wounded, injured, and sick military service personnel—both active duty and veterans—to compete and inspire. In the United States, the games hold special significance, as competitors represent the United States Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, and Special Operations Command. These athletes embody resilience, turning life-changing injuries or illnesses into stories of triumph. The U.S. team, known as Team USA, has been a cornerstone of the event, showcasing the indomitable spirit of American service members.
One standout example is Elizabeth (Ellie) Marks, who joined the U.S. Armed Forces at just 17 in 2009, following in the footsteps of her father, who enlisted at 17 in 1969 to serve in Vietnam. During her deployment as a combat medic in Iraq in 2010, Marks sustained a hip injury that limited her mobility. While recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, she discovered swimming and began competing at a professional level. Her journey reflects the Invictus Games’ core mission: to use sport as a tool for recovery and rehabilitation. The games’ motto, “I AM”, captures the essence of self-empowerment and determination that athletes like Marks exemplify.
Serious illness or injury can profoundly impact a service member’s way of life, often confining them to a hospital bed and altering their physical capabilities. The Invictus Games counter this by fostering camaraderie, purpose, and renewed identity. Governance of the games is overseen by a dedicated team, including Founding Patron Prince Harry, Chairman Lord Allen of Kensington, and Chief Executive Rob Owen, with headquarters in London. The event has also expanded globally, with Uganda becoming the second African nation to join in July 2026—though participation was later cast into doubt after a royal clarification regarding Prince Harry’s status. Despite such complexities, the Invictus Games remain a beacon of hope, celebrating the unconquered spirit of those who served.
