Mergelstetten, a district in the German town of Heidenheim, has become the focal point of global climate innovation with the official inauguration of the Catch4Climate pioneering plant. This facility, operated by thyssenkrupp Polysius, is the world’s first industrial-scale demonstration of the Pure Oxyfuel technology for cement production. By replacing ambient air with pure oxygen in the clinker burning process, the plant dramatically increases the CO₂ concentration in the exhaust gas, enabling the capture of up to 95% of CO₂ emissions—including the unavoidable process emissions from limestone calcination. With a daily capacity of around 450 tonnes of clinker, the CI4C (Cement Innovation for Climate) plant serves as a critical platform for research, validation, and further development. This milestone underscores thyssenkrupp’s commitment to sustainable innovation and represents a significant step toward climate-neutral cement production at scale.

The technology’s potential is immense, as the cement industry is one of the most carbon-intensive sectors globally. The successful operation of this plant in Mergelstetten could pave the way for widespread adoption, helping to decarbonize a material essential to modern infrastructure. thyssenkrupp Calvion will now take over the further development, scale-up, and commercialization of the technology, aiming to bring it to markets worldwide. In parallel, Mergelstetten is also experiencing positive local developments. A former logistics hall, nearly 60 years old, is being transformed into a new retail hub. The building, located on Paul-Hartmann-Straße, will soon house a full-range supermarket, a bakery, and a drugstore, significantly improving local shopping options.
